The talk presents an explorative analysis of an accidential field experiment on eBay. More than 36.000 train tickets of Deutsche Bahn's first time sales at a discount grocer were sold during a period of 137 days by individuals on eBay. Part of the sellers quickly disovered that the original bundle of two tickets could be sold individually. A comparative analysis of the seller of single and bundle ticket auctions provides no evidence of systematic differences of both groups.The following findings can be reported. In a very competitive environment (1) prices are significantly lower on Sundays and (2) Auctions that last only one day receive significantly higher prices on average than longer auctions. (3) Sellers gain significant rents from unbundling train tickets what can't be explained by shipping costs or buyer experience.
