America First, Made in China 2025 – and Europe?

A European Perspective on the World Economy: ZEW President’s New Year’s Lecture

What can we expect in 2020? The global economy is fragile. The trade dispute between the USA and China has been shaking the markets and weakening the economy. Both US President Donald Trump with his slogan “America First” and Chinese President Xi Jinping with his “Made in China 2025” strategy are pursuing a nationally oriented economic policy. Germany with its export-led economy particularly suffers from this trade conflict, all while having to cope with the structural change brought about by digital transformation and the energy transition. Germany and Europe are struggling to find an adequate response to these economic challenges and to react to this new international economic order.

At ZEW we closely analyse these developments, give detailed assessments and develop concrete recommendations on how Europe and Germany should position themselves in the coming years. In this first ZEW New Year’s lecture, President Professor Achim Wambach will discuss these challenges and provide an outlook into the future. Please note that this is a German-speaking event.

We would like to thank the ZEW Sponsors’ Association for Science and Practice for supporting the event.

Participation is by invitation and for members of the ZEW Sponsors’ Association.
