And the winner is...
On 2 December 2022, Ministerial Director Dr. Stefan Profit of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Action honoured the winning teams of the YES! high school competition in Berlin. ZEW researcher Bastian Krieger from the “Economics of Innovation and Industrial Dynamics” Unit mentored the successful team from St. Raphael Gymnasium in Heidelberg, which won the Best Scientific Analysis Award. This award is given to the team whose evidence-based solution stands out for the high quality of its scientific research. Congratulations!

Based on Bastian Krieger’s topic “How can public demand for environmentally friendly products be promoted?”, the young people developed their solution “Bring the public back into public procurement!” to increase sustainability in public procurement. In the presence of ZEW researcher Krieger, they were given the opportunity to present their idea to representatives from politics and administration, who were enthusiastic about the solution and showed great interest.

ZEW is already preparing for the next round! For the YES! 2023, ZEW Mannheim returns and throws five exciting and challenging topics into the ring:

ZEW is looking forward to new exciting solutions from the students and fruitful discussions with the mentoring researchers.

About YES!

YES! – Young Economic Solutions (formerly Young Economic Summit), a joint project by the ZBW – Leibniz Information Centre for Economics and the Joachim Herz Stiftung in Hamburg, is one of the biggest German school competitions aimed at getting young people to engage with global economic and social issues. Over the course of a six-month mentoring programme, student teams tackle pressing issues facing future generations. The students come up with their own solutions to global economic, ecological and social problems and present them as part of the YES! – Young Economic Solutions conference to other students. Researchers from various (Leibniz) research institutions support the students by providing their scientific expertise.
