ZEW to Start New Podcast “Economics Actually”
#ZEWPodcastNew Podcast Design for Insights into the Many Facets of Research at ZEW
ZEW Mannheim has hosted its own podcast for more than five years – now it is time for a new design. Under the title “ZEW Economics Actually”, researchers from the Centre for European Economic Research will provide information on study findings, scientific methods and contributions to current debates in politics and society.
Two new podcast formats will be produced: The short format “Economics Actually – Concise” features focused, up-to-date insights into current topics and debates. The long format “Economics Actually – Background“ provides a forum for ZEW researchers and specially selected guests to discuss their research findings and put them into context.
First episode with ZEW President Achim Wambach
In the first edition of Economics Actually, ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach, PhD looks back on the year 2025 and gives his assessment of the current situation. He addresses the stormy debates surrounding Trump's tariff policy and reaffirms his support for emissions trading, which has been postponed until 2028. He also reports on the fresh impulses that his research trip to Central Europe has given him and on the extraordinary successes that 2025 has brought for ZEW itself and which have set the strategic course for the coming years.
New name, new studio, new team
The title “Economics Actually” encompasses the broad and diverse field of economics and is intended to make clear how many facets are hidden behind it.
“Listeners can look forward to a colourful bouquet of different economic topics,” announces Katrin Müller in the pilot episode. The head of ZEW’s Communications Unit and Press Officer Fabian Oppel begin this episode by providing a first overview of the content the podcast will cover in future, for example an interview with Paul Milgrom, Nobel Laureate in Economics, the report by Economic Expert Monika Schnitzer, as well as contributions on the topic of loss of income for women after the birth of their first child or on hate speech in social media.
A dedicated podcast studio has been set up at ZEW to produce the episodes. The host team is made up of members of the ZEW Communications Unit and ZEW’s Executive Directors.
All episodes will be available on all common podcast platforms and on the ZEW website. Subscribe to the podcast so that you never miss a new episode, for example on Spotify, Apple Podcasts or Deezer.
