Second ZEW/IAB/RCEA Workshop on Spatial Dimensions of the Labour Market – The Relocation of Jobs

Workshop

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), the Institute for Employment Research (IAB), and the Rimini Centre for Economic Analysis (RCEA) are pleased to announce the second joint workshop on spatial dimensions of the labour market on March 13 and 14, 2013, in Nuremberg, Germany.

The rapid improvements of the information and communication technology change the nature of international trade and its effects on labour markets. These technological advances enable firms to spatially slice up their value chains through offshoring. In addition, firms are now able to trade tasks. Therefore, workers performing tradable tasks are directly exposed to these changes and threatened by a relocation of their jobs.

The second workshop on Spatial Dimensions of the Labour Market focuses on a broad range of topics revolving around these and further aspects of the relocation of jobs. The objective of the workshop, financed by funds of the SEEK research programme, is to bring together frontier research of labour economists, regional economists, geographers, and scholars from related fields.

Topics of Interest

Theoretical, empirical, and policy-oriented contributions are welcome. The workshop has a special focus on the relocation of jobs and the international outsourcing of economic activity (including foreign direct investment). Apart from this interest, a non-exhaustive list of topics is:

  • Trade in tasks and offshoring
  • Firms’ and workers’ exposure to trade
  • Web-based global labour markets
  • Spatial mismatch, unemployment and spatial job search
  • Mobility of labour
