Panel Discussion Organised by the State of Baden-Württemberg

Market-based control vs. state control – What’s the best mix? Is it the task of the state to regulate market-economy activities on a large scale when it comes to climate protection? ZEW economist Professor Martin Kesternich will discuss this topic in a panel debate on 6 June 2019 at the Staatsgalerie Stuttgart, following an invitation of the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Economic Affairs.

A balance must be struck between market-based control and state control. Where does the responsibility lie – with the state or rather with actors, enterprises, and employees? Where are state regulations necessary and where does it make more sense not to interfere with market forces and competition? Martin Kesternich, deputy head of the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management”, will discuss these topics together with Helen Lückge, Climonomics and board member of the Forum Ökologisch-Soziale Marktwirtschaft (FÖS). The debate, entitled “Market-based control vs. state control – What’s the best mix?”, will be moderated by the pastor and managing director of the Hohenwart Forum, Uwe Roßwag-Hofmann, and will start at 1:30 p.m.

Focus on the economic dimension of a sustainable good life

The event series “Nachhaltig Gut Leben – Wirtschaftsentwicklung unter begrenzten Ressourcen” (“Living Well and Sustainably – Economic Development with Limited Resources”) is an initiative of the State Government’s Advisory Council for Sustainable Development. For more than a year, various forums have been discussing what our future economic and social model could look like in view of limited resources. With the first events having shed light on sustainability from an ecological and social point of view, the panel debate on 6 June 2019 will now focus on its economic dimension. Dr. Nicole Hoffmeister-Kraut MdL, Minister of Economic Affairs, Labour and Housing in Baden-Württemberg, will open the event with a welcoming address.

WIN Charter: Applied sustainability at ZEW

ZEW has joined Baden-Württemberg’s sustainability initiative in 2017 by signing the WIN Charter, an instrument developed as part of the strategy. With this initiative, the institute makes a clear commitment to economic, ecological and social responsibility. The ZEW target concept, which was submitted to the state of Baden-Württemberg in 2018, defines the goals and the intended measures for increasing sustainability in the institute.
