Labour Markets and Social Insurance
Yaming Cao has been a researcher in the ZEW Research Unit “Labour Markets and Social Insurance” since September 2023, working within the “Health at Work” research area. She completed her PhD in Economics at Ohio State University in the US in 2023.
Throughout their lives, individuals face substantial risks in the form of health shocks, family transitions and ageing. Yaming’s research focuses on how society can best protect people against these risks throughout their lives while preserving economic efficiency and promoting equity.
The first strand of her research focuses on the design of social insurance. She studies how to design programmes that effectively protect individuals and families while minimising unintended distortions to labour supply and productivity. This requires an understanding of the nature of risks and their economic consequences, which is achieved through empirical analysis, and then exploring how policies can be improved. She emphasises two critical areas: health shocks and childbirth.
The second strand of her research shifts the focus from institutional design to individuals themselves, asking how people can be better prepared to manage life-cycle risks. In particular, she examines how social interactions shape skill formation, thereby influencing individuals’ capacity to cope with risks throughout their lives.
