Labour Markets and Social Insurance

Nicolas Ziebarth is head of ZEW’s Research Unit “Labour Markets and Social Insurance” and a professor of economics at the University of Mannheim. Before joining ZEW in July 2022, he was a tenured associate professor at Cornell University.
 
Professor Ziebarth’s research focuses on the interplay between health, labor markets, and social insurance programs, particularly health insurance, long-term care insurance, workers’ compensation, and disability insurance. In particular, he is an international expert on the economics of paid sick leave. His research has received widespread international media attention and has informed German and U.S. policymaking on paid sick leave, including the first-ever temporary federal paid sick leave mandate under the Families First Coronavirus Response Act and legislative proposals such as the Healthy Families Act.

Ziebarth has received numerous awards for his research. Among other honors, the German Health Economics Association (dggö) has recognized him three times for the best research health economics article published in 2011, 2018, and 2026. The American Risk and Insurance Association awarded him the Early Career Scholarly Achievement in 2021. Nicolas Ziebarth serves on the editorial board of the Journal of Health Economics, the Journal of Population Economics, and as a senior editor for the Journal of Risk and Insurance.
