Irene Bertschek Becomes Member of New Expert Committee

ZEW Economist Irene Bertschek has been appointed to the Forum #Zukunftsstrategie by Federal Research Minister.

Professor Irene Bertschek, head of the “Digital Economy” Research Unit at ZEW Mannheim, has been appointed to the newly established Forum #Zukunftsstrategie by Federal Research Minister Bettina Stark-Watzinger. Her task there will be to advise the government on digital and technological sovereignty. The Forum convened for the first time on Thursday, 21 September 2023.

“Digitalisation and technological sovereignty are vital for the resilience and future potential of our economy and society. I am pleased to have been selected to be the custodian of this challenging mission of the Future Strategy,” Bertschek says about her appointment.

Advising the federal government

Adopted in February, the federal government’s “Future Research and Innovation Strategy” is divided up into six missions which aim to address societal and global challenges. The Forum #Zukunftsstrategie comprises 21 experts from the fields of business, academia, and civil society who will provide guidance to both the federal government and the mission teams in implementing the Future Strategy. Irene Bertschek is the patron of Mission IV: “Securing digital and technological sovereignty in Germany and Europe and harnessing the potential of digitalisation”, alongside Dr. Stefan Joeres (Robert Bosch GmbH) and Verena Pausder (German Startups Association).
