Health apps have long been ubiquitous, from pedometers in mobile phones to specialised digital therapy. In the new background edition of “ZEW Wirklich Wirtschaft”, Dr. Sabrina Schubert, a researcher in the ZEW research group “Health Care Markets and Health Policy”, explains what distinguishes digital health applications (DiGAs) from other health apps. The podcast is available on all popular platforms, such as Spotify, Apple Podcasts and Deezer, as well as on the ZEW website.

Based on her own research, Schubert shows that since the introduction of regulation, ‘more quantity, but not necessarily more quality’ has come to the overall market for health apps: there are more apps, but not more evidence-based offerings – and broad innovation (for new clinical pictures) remains rare. Possible levers for change are discussed, as well as how ZEW will work even more intensively in this field of research in the future. The talk was led by podcast host Fabian Oppel.
