The digitalisation of production and business processes has been continuously accelerating over the years. Moreover, digital technologies increasingly foster the creation of new business models. It is widely expected that the ongoing digitalisation will lead to fundamental changes in existing value chains and business models in the future. A successful digital transition of the economy is often assigned a key role for future economic growth and wealth creation. These trends will highly influence the environment in which small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are operating. The aim of the study is to investigate the status quo of digitalisation among German SMEs, as well as implications of the ongoing digitalisation for SMEs. Besides obtaining representative results by means of a firm survey the project makes use of case studies and expert interviews.
