The aim of this study is to update a report on key innovation indicators for the chemical industry for the year 2021. In extension to previous studies, the 2021 edition also covers pharmaceuticals in the same way as chemicals. In a concise way, the study offers an overview on the state and recent developments in research and innovation in the German chemical and pharmaceutical industry as well as in science and technology related to chemistry and pharmaceuticals. Indicators cover R&D and innovation activities of firms, research and education in the public sector as well as economic results of innovation efforts (including exports of high-technology goods).As a special topic, the 2021 edition of the report looks on likely impacts of the Covid-19 pandemic on research and innovation in the chemical and pharmaceutical industry in Germany.
