    On 8 December 2016, the Mannheim-based Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) will hold a ceremony to celebrate its 25th anniversary. In 1991 the institute opened its doors with only a small team of employees. Today, 25 years later, ZEW has become one of the leading economic research institutes in Germany and Europe. Though only established relatively recently, the economic research institution has become an unparalleled success.

    Economic expectations for Switzerland keep rising for the second consecutive time since March 2016.

    The The ZEW-CS-Indicator for the economic sentiment in Switzerland has risen by 9.0 points to a reading of 11.5 points in April 2016. This increase further widens the gap between the indicator’s current positive value and negative territory, thereby continuing the trend seen in the previous month. The current economic situation is also assessed as being slightly more positive in comparison to that of the previous month, with a reading of minus 0.1 points. The ZEW-CS-Indicator reflects the expectations of the surveyed financial market experts regarding the economic development in Switzerland on a six-month time horizon. It is calculated on a monthly basis by the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in cooperation with Credit Suisse (CS), Zurich.

    ECB | Central Bank

    The European Central Bank (ECB) has decided to reduce the interest rate for the marginal lending facility to zero per cent, and that for the deposit facility from minus 0.3 to minus 0.4 per cent. In addition, the ECB has extended its asset purchasing programme, "Quantitative Easing", by a further 20 billion, thus providing a total of 80 billion euros, and determined a further liquidity programme for banks. This decision exceeds market expectations and leads to extreme reactions in the German and US stock markets. Professor Sascha Steffen, head of the Research Department "International Finance and Financial Management" at the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), provides a statement about the ECB's latest decision.

    The new homepage of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) was launched at www.zew.eu on January 25, 2016. After several months of construction, the relaunch of the institute's website has been successfully completed. A special focus was set on a clear presentation of the extensive, international activities of the economic research institute, which include research and economic policy advice as well as knowledge transfer, events, and qualification programmes. Against the backdrop of an increasingly professional science communication, the new homepage constitutes a key component in ZEW's communication strategy.

    At the general assembly of the Sponsors' Association for Science and Practice at the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), a new chairman and deputy chairman have been elected. The position as chairman of the Sponsors' Association is to be filled by Dr. Alexander Selent, vice chairman of the executive board and head of finance at Fuchs Petrolub SE. The position of deputy chairman will be filled by Luka Mucic, member of the executive board and the global managing board of SAP SE.

    Minister of Science, Research and the Arts, Theresia Bauer, visited the Heidelberg University of Education (PH) to give her personal seal of approval to the research project "Real-World Lab Asylum". The cooperation project between the PH Heidelberg, the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), and a number of additional partners addresses the question of how asylum seekers living in the towns of Heidelberg, Sinsheim and Wiesloch can be integrated into society as quickly as possible.

    Last week, ZEW's Director of Business and Administration, Thomas Kohl, joined a delegation of 120 representatives from the fields of politics, business and academia to China, following an invitation by the State of Baden-Württemberg. He undertook a packed programme of meetings and visits in Beijing, Shenyang, Nanjing, Shanghai, and the Eastern Chinese city of Taicang, where around 230 businesses from Baden-Württemberg have established local branches. During the delegation's visit to China, a cooperation agreement was signed between the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), a member of the Leibniz Association, and the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing.

    The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) has been granted the official title "TOTAL E-QUALITY" for the first time and is thus considered an employer who is particularly committed to ensuring equal opportunities for men and women in the workplace. The title acknowledges ZEW as an institute that sets a good example in the reconciliation of work and family life. Every year the award, presented in Hamburg by the association TOTAL E-QUALITY Germany, honours economic, scientific and administrative organisations and associations that make a sustainable contribution to ensuring equal opportunities. The title will now hold for a period of three years, until 2017.

    Why is start-up activity in Germany decreasing, and what are the characteristics of an attractive business location? These were the main topics discussed at the "Dialogue on Deck: Cities Need Founders" event staged by the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) on July 23. The event took place on board the exhibition ship MS Wissenschaft (MS Science), which anchored in Mannheim from July 23-26, 2015. Dr. Peter Kurz, First Major of the City of Mannheim, Dr. Georg Licht, head of the ZEW Research Department "Industrial Economics and International Management", and Jacqueline Yildirim, founder of JACQ GmbH, discussed the overall start-up situation in Germany and, in particular, in Mannheim, as well as the factors that are decisive for the attractiveness of business locations for founders.
