Digital Transformation and Changing World of Work – DiWaBe 2.0

Digital transformation and the associated increase in the use of artificial intelligence (AI) are leading to fundamental structural change in the world of work. As part of the project, the second wave of the employee survey "Digitalization and the Changing World of Work" (DiWaBe 2.0) was conducted in 2024 with around 9,800 employees subject to social security contributions, and subjected to initial analyses. The survey captures the diffusion of new technologies in the workplace (with a focus on AI), along with the associated effects on occupational activities, work organisation, further training and health. Supplemented with administrative establishment and employee data, and linkable to an establishment survey, this yields the DiWaBe 2.0 employer-employee dataset.
Initial findings show that more than half of employees already use AI; though predominantly on an informal basis. ZEW Discussion Paper No. 26-001, "Low Barriers, High Stakes: Formal and Informal Diffusion of AI in the Workplace", explores these findings in greater depth. Building on the data, the academic work will continue beyond the project's runtime.
Under an agreement among all cooperation partners, the project's implementation and reporting were financially supported by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (BAuA) until 31 January 2025.
