The Relevance of Non-State Actors for Individual Climate Protection Activities and Climate Policy: A Theoretical, Experimental, and Empirical Analysis (NostaClimate)

The project "The relevance of non-state actors for individual climate protection activities and climate policy: A theoretical, experimental, and empirical analysis (NostaClimate)", financed by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), aims at the examination of the potential influence of non-state actors on greenhouse gas emissions by own climate protection activities, by influencing attitudes and behaviour of individual actors and by monitoring climate protection activities of state or other non-state actors. In NostaClimate the group of non-state actors comprises civil society groups (e.g. non-governmental organizations, churches), economic actors (e.g. firms, businesses and trade unions), and sub-national and local actors (e.g. municipalities).

NostaClimate employs a mix of complementary methods to analyze these research questions. Based on theoretical, empirical and experimental results the potential influence of different non-state actors will be evaluated. The project is accompanied by an extensive communication with relevant stake-holders. Based on that recommendations for state actors (i.e. for national and international climate policy) and for several non-state actors (i.e. especially municipalities and firms and other employers) are elaborated, e.g. on influencing attitudes and behaviour of individual actors and by monitoring climate protection activities of state or other non-state actors.
