Professor emeritus Egon Lorenz, former Supervisory Board member of ZEW Mannheim and legal scholar at the University of Mannheim.

Professor emeritus Egon Lorenz, former Supervisory Board member of ZEW Mannheim and legal scholar at the University of Mannheim, passed away on 16 October 2019 at the age of 85. The legal expert contributed his scientific expertise to the ZEW committee for 16 years.

Egon Lorenz was professor of civil law, private international law and insurance law at the University of Mannheim from 1970 until his retirement in 2002. From 1987 to 2002 he was the managing director of the Institute for Insurance Law at the University of Mannheim, which he co-founded. From February 1991, shortly before ZEW commenced its work, until November 2007, Lorenz was one of eleven members of the ZEW Supervisory Board. For many years, Egon Lorenz has meritoriously contributed his legal expertise to the Supervisory Board’s work at our institute, much to the benefit of ZEW. We are greatly indebted to him,” says ZEW Director Thomas Kohl.

In addition to his commitment to his faculty and ZEW, Lorenz was for many years chairman of the board of the Verein Versicherungswirtschaft e.V., board member of the Deutscher Verein für Versicherungswissenschaft and member of the insurance advisory board of what is now the Federal Financial Supervisory Authority. He was the editor of the journal “Versicherungsrecht” and was awarded the Cross of the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany in 2007 for his outstanding achievements in jurisprudence and judicature.
