Thomas Kohl is the Managing Director of ZEW. He is involved in various national and international working groups, advisory boards and committees and is a visiting professor at the University of International Business and Economics (UIBE) in Beijing, China, as well as the Shandong University of Finance and Economics (SDUFE) in Jinan, China. In addition, he is a member of the advisory board of the foundation Hector Stiftung II as well as various appointment committees and selection committees, including for the research award “Zukunft der Arbeitswelt” (“The Future of the Working World”) of the Volksbank Kurpfalz Stiftung and ZEW. Thomas Kohl is involved in various committees of the Leibniz Association, such as the administrative committee, the programme advisory board for executives, and the speaker’s council. He is one of the four founding directors of the Leibniz ScienceCampi “Mannheim Centre for Competition and Innovation” (MaCCI) and “MannheimTaxation”.
Before he joined ZEW, Thomas Kohl worked as administrative manager for the German Foundation for International Development (DSE), now GIZ, from 1987 to 1992, right after completing his studies in administration. His areas of responsibility at DSE were human resources management, finance, organisation and IT. He also coordinated the establishment of the DSE branch in Magdeburg after German reunification. When he took up his position at ZEW in 1992, Thomas Kohl was initially ZEW’s head of human resources and later became head of the “General Services” Unit. In April 2001, he was appointed Deputy Director of Business and Administration. Since August 2004, Thomas Kohl has been ZEW’s Managing Director.
