The Mannheim Enterprise Panel

The Mannheim Enterprise Panel

The Mannheim Enterprise Panel (MUP) is the most comprehensive non-official panel database on firms in Germany, covering more than 9 million companies. It has been compiled by ZEW in cooperation with Creditreform since 1992 and allows firms to be tracked over time, including their formation, closure, growth, and other developments. The MUP provides the basis for numerous scientific studies and surveys and contains a wide range of information, including firms’ founding dates, employment, sales, industries, legal forms, ownership structures, and balance sheet information.

ZEW offers several data products and indicators derived from the MUP for purchase. The MUP indicators on firm formation and closure provide regionally and sectorally disaggregated time series on business dynamics in Germany. The results are regularly published in ZEW’s JUNGE UNTERNEHMEN and Unternehmensschließungen publication series.

In addition, the MUP serves as the sampling frame for several firm surveys. These include the Mannheim Innovation Panel (MIP), the IAB/ZEW Start-up Panel, the Mannheim Web Panel (MWP), the ZEW ICT Survey; and the KfW SME Panel.

Through the MUP-BHP Link (in German), firm-level information from the MUP can also be linked to employment data from the Establishment History Panel (BHP) of the Institute for Employment Research (IAB). This linkage supplements the information available in the MUP with detailed data on firms’ employment structures and employment dynamics.
