Irene Bertschek on potential AI partnership between Germany and Nvidia

According to media reports, the German government is looking to enter a partnership with US chip manufacturer Nvidia to advance artificial intelligence (AI). German firms also want to join in.

Professor Irene Bertschek, head of ZEW’s Research Unit “Digital Economy”, explains:

“A cooperation between the German government and Nvidia is a strategically important step towards securing access to chips and, consequently, computing capacity. It will move forward the development and application of AI in the German economy. Especially in the field of industrial AI, Germany has considerable potential, which needs to be better harnessed. The cooperation with Nvidia, the world’s leading US chip manufacturer, can make an important contribution to this.

But European AI infrastructures, AI models and technological capabilities need to be strengthened in parallel. This also includes chip production; otherwise, there may be no alternatives available in future and technological dependencies will continue to deepen.”
