During the last decades, standard full-time hours have become more and more exceptional. Not only the amount of working hours is more dispersed now, also the timing of work changed a lot. Both, the amount and the timing of working hours may have diverse effects on wages, training and promotion opportunities as well as on total employment. The aim of this workshop, taking place at the ZEW in Mannheim on July 2-3, 2001, is to discuss international research results on the relationship between wages, working hours and employment.

Furthermore, an increasing number of employees are concerned with new working time arrangements, such as flexible working hours or annual working time accounts. <HTML>

</HTML>Both, the amount and the timing of working hours may have diverse effects on wages, training and promotion opportunities as well as on total employment. Since the institutional framework, the national labor market constitution and the individual preferences on working hours are important determinants of the potential wage and employment effects, international comparison will shed more light on the underlying mechanisms. Thus, the aim of this workshop is to discuss international research results on the relationship between wages, working hours and employment. <HTML>
