Monitoring of Research and Innovation in Switzerland 2026 - Comparing Switzerland with selected regions

Monitoring of Research and Innovation in Switzerland 2026 - Comparing Switzerland with selected regions

The aim of this project is to compare Switzerland's research and innovation (R&I) performance with that of selected regions in other countries for the ongoing R&I monitoring of Switzerland. This regional comparison complements analyses at the national level and continues corresponding studies from previous years. Regions with similar economic structural characteristics and a similar size to Switzerland are selected for this purpose. This will allow for additional insights into the strengths and weaknesses of Swiss research and innovation performance. A total of six European, six North American, and ten East Asian regions are considered. R&I performance is measured using four indicator areas:

  1. Research activities of industry and academia
  2. Scientific publications as a direct result of research activities, particularly in the scientific field
  3. Patent applications as a direct result of research activities, particularly in the industrial sector
  4. Technology and innovation activities of companies

Data sources include R&D statistics, bibliometric databases, patent databases, and information on company websites. For the analysis of company websites, we collaborate with istari.ai.
