Labour Markets and Social Insurance

Camila Steffens joined the ZEW Research Unit “Labour Markets and Social Insurance” in September 2024. Her research interests lie in the fields of empirical labour economics and applied microeconometrics, with particular attention to how workers, firms, and local labour markets adjust to labour demand shocks and regulatory changes. She also conducts research on causal inference methods, as well as on health and development economics.

Camila completed her undergraduate studies in economics at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul and earned a master’s degree in economics from the University of São Paulo, both in Brazil. In December 2024, she obtained her PhD in economics with distinction from the Universidad Carlos III de Madrid. She has also been selected as a mentee for the 2025–2026 mentorship program of the Society of Labor Economists (SOLE).

Her current research projects include, among others, examining whether public spending can stimulate local labour markets, assessing how to address pre-trends in difference-in-differences designs and studying how local retailers adapt to competition from e-commerce.
