Network Activity on non-CO2 Greenhouse Gases (GHG)

The general objective of the action was to share non-CO2 modelling activities of EU partners and verify their results.

Two main tasks can be identified:

1. To pursue and enhance the activities originated through the GECS project in the field of CO2 and non-CO2 GHG analysis.
Partners reviewed and exchanged their non-CO2 GHG modelling activities and data base developments taking advantage of the interactions between their existing models. These models include the bottom-up energy system model POLES, the top-down computable general equilibrium model PACE, and the agricultural sector model AGRIPOL. Special emphasis was given to the question of how the incorporation of non-CO2 GHG and sink credits affects optimal climate change policies. Furthermore, a key objective was to assess the implications of non-CO2 emissions and sink credits on EU internal burden sharing under the Kyoto Protocol and future climate policy agreements.

2. To assure the regular presence of the network activity partners at the round (#21) of the Energy Modelling Forum (EMF), whose objective is to compare and contrast CO2-only mitigation versus multi-gas abatement strategies (including sinks) for harmonized scenarios and targets. The EMF participation provided an opportunity to learn more about different modelling approaches of international modelling teams and available international emission projections and mitigation estimates for other GHG (methane, nitrous oxide, HFCs, PFCs, and SF6) as well as for terrestrial carbon sequestration. Regular contribution by the partners on the EU non-CO2 emissions and sink credits allowed to better shape the EU position in the context of global mid- and long-term GHG mitigation scenarios.
