Motives to Publish: Patterns, Strategies, and Motives for Scientific Publishing by Firms

The PUBMOTIVE project aimed to analyze the publishing behavior of companies, which has been little studied so far. In particular, its focus was on i) identifying publishing companies and their characteristics, ii) investigating their motives for publishing, iii) the impact of publishing on corporate strategy and success, and iv) the necessary framework conditions for publishing in and around the company. Methodologically, the project focused on the identification of scientific publications by companies. For this purpose, the institutional affiliation of authors of scientific publications from the Scopus database was compared with the basic population of companies in Germany in the Mannheim Enterprise Panel. The project thus ties in with studies on the development of companies' publishing behavior and its motives. It also extends analyses of the impact of publishing and its interaction with other corporate strategies, such as intellectual property management. The unique selling point of the project is the completeness of the companies covered. Established studies usually include a selection of large companies or companies with high research and development expenditures. However, smaller, young companies are becoming increasingly important in the field of basic research. The combination of the two databases showed that the aggregated publication volume of companies in Germany fluctuated slightly in the period from 2008 to 2016 and was increasingly concentrated in a smaller number of companies. The volume was particularly distributed among large and patenting companies, with the increasing publication intensity driven by the high-tech and medium-high-tech industries. An online survey of authors with corporate affiliations further revealed that companies publish in scientific journals in particular because of the external signaling impact of publications. The most important reason for the authors was their contribution to scientific progress. External demands and their career played a less important role for them on average.Adding further company information from the Mannheim Innovation Panel to the combination of the Scopus database and the Mannheim Enterprise Panel indicated an interplay of publishing with the patenting and standardization behavior of companies. In particular, a combination of patenting and publishing seems to reduce the positive influence of both individual measures on the success of market novelties.A separate analysis with a focus on European firms with high R&D expenditures further showed that increasing publication intensity of firms initially increases their market capitalization and labor productivity, but too high intensities harm productivity. For this analysis, publication data from the Scopus database were linked to company data from the R&D Scoreboard for 2010-2019.The results of the PUBMOTIVE project were presented at seven conferences and workshops. In particular, the Atlanta Conference on Science and Innovation Policy of the Georgia Institute of Technology at the beginning of the project provided important impulses at the start of the project. The organized online workshop summarized the results and enabled their presentation and discussion with top representatives from politics, companies, associations, and research. Furthermore, in combination with other public relations measures, such as the publication of articles in ZEWnews and their promotion in social media, it allowed for a diffusion of the results. Also, at the end of the project, a special track on entrepreneurial publishing was organized at the renowned Eu-SPRI annual conference under the leadership of Prof. Torben Schubert. The track presented the central results of the project to a broad scientific public.
