ZEW President Prof. Clemens Fuest speaks at the first annual MaTax conference

How should a sustainable tax system be designed in order to face new challenges of economy and society as a whole? This is the central question at the Leibniz-ScienceCampus "Mannheim Taxation" (MaTax). The joint research project of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the University of Mannheim was launched on April 1, 2014. Now ZEW hosted the first MaTax conference in Mannheim on September 17 and 18, 2014. About 80 researchers from Germany and abroad attended the event.

For two days, current topics in the field of taxation were discussed, ranging from the possible structuring of multinationals and profit shifting to low-tax countries to R&D tax credits for companies and the effects of an increased exchange of information between tax authorities.

The MaTax conference was concluded with ceremonial addresses by the Minister of Science, Research and the Arts of Baden-Wuerttemberg, Theresia Bauer, as well as the President of the Leibniz Association, Prof. Dr. Matthias Kleiner.

MaTax is jointly funded by ZEW and the University of Mannheim as well as the Leibniz Association, of which ZEW is a member, and the State of Baden-Württemberg.  The ScienceCampus also collaborates with the Institute for Financial and Tax Law of Heidelberg University. MaTax currently involves 15 professors and 60 junior researchers.
