Population trends are leading towards regional disparities. Prosperous regions are facing shrinking ones. An increasing average life expectancy will raise the number of households. Then again, a lower demand for housing space in some regions causes a depreciation of prices in the real estate market. In order to take this into account, long-term policies for urban development and supply of housing space have to be thought up, always bearing in mind the latest findings and forecasts.
