The President of the Leibniz Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, Professor Achim Wambach, PhD, will remain at the helm of the institute for another five years. The Ministry of Science, Research and Arts of the German state of Baden-Württemberg has extended Wambach’s term of office until 2031. With this, ZEW will continue on its successful course in research, policy advice and public visibility.
Dr. Hans J. Reiter, Ministerial Director and Deputy Minister at the Baden-Württemberg Ministry of Science, Research and Arts, praised the achievements of the ZEW President: “In increasingly challenging economic times, the ZEW has further strengthened its position as a leading economic research institute under the leadership of Professor Wambach. With its work, the institute delivers important impulses on key national and international economic policy issues. In particular, its outstanding performance in its evaluation by the Leibniz Association in 2023 and the successful acquisition of additional funding for the project “Research on Health Care Markets in the Digital Age” in 2025 demonstrate how efficient and forward-looking ZEW is. I am delighted that we will be continuing this successful collaboration for the next five years and wish Professor Wambach and ZEW continued success.”
Achim Wambach expressed his gratitude for the trust placed in him: “I am very pleased about the extension of my term of office and the trust that has once again been placed in me. ZEW stands for excellent research with high social relevance. Together with our employees, I would like to continue on this course and further strengthen the institute in the coming years. An important element in this will be the establishment of our new Research Unit “Health Care Markets and Health Policy,” which will contribute significantly to further raising our profile.”
‘I am delighted that our excellent collaboration is set to continue. This puts the institute in an excellent position to take on the tasks that lie ahead in the coming years,’ said Claudia von Schuttenbach, Managing Director of ZEW.
By extending Achim Wambach's term of office, the Ministry and ZEW are underlining their shared goal of further advancing evidence-based economic policy at the highest scientific level and sustainably securing ZEW's role among the leading European research institutes in the long term.
