Future Construction: Development of the Market Structure in the German Construction Industry

Future Construction: Development of the Market Structure in the German Construction Industry

In contrast to many other markets, the construction industry shows no signs of consolidation, but is rather characterized by a pronounced fragmentation of firms. Especially in saturated markets, a consolidation usually takes place over time, which is reflected in a reduction in the number of market participants and a simultaneous increase in the size of the remaining market participants. This is, however, not the case in the construction industry, where the average company size is less than ten employees. The purpose of this study is to investigate and explain the reasons for this development. Further, possible consequences for construction prices and corporate creditworthiness, resulting from this development, should be pointed out. In addition, it is being investigated at the current edge whether this development continues or even intensifies.
