A group of young economists from the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management” participated in the Young Scientists Workshop organised by the Chapter of Environmental and Resource Economists (Ausschuss für Umwelt- und Ressourcenökonomie, AURö) of the Verein für Socialpolitik (VfS, German Economic Association). At the workshop held at the University of Kassel, a team of researchers from ZEW presented their findings to an audience of economic professionals.

At the event, the team of ZEW economists presented and discussed questions related to environmental and resource economics which focused, amongst other things, on the advantages of having a pioneering role in climate negotiations, CO2 compensations for businesses, behavioural patterns in energy conservation (rebound effect), regular investments in the validity of patents as a measure of company expectations for future environmental regulations as well as on environmental clauses in trade agreements. The workshop also included scientific sessions with editors and authors of relevant specialist publications in the field of environmental and resource economics, and offered the ZEW researchers the opportunity to network with young economists from other research institutions.

The VfS AURö Young Scientists Workshop, which is held on an annual basis in different universities and scientific institutions in German-speaking countries, aims at establishing networks among young scientists who are active in the field of environmental and resource economics. ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach served as chairman of the VfS from 2017 to 2018.

The VfS, one of the largest economic associations in Europe, has around 4,000 personal and institutional members from German-speaking countries. The VfS Annual Conference will be held on 22 to 25 September 2019 at the University of Leipzig. The theme of the conference will be “30 Years Since the Fall of the Berlin Wall – Democracy and the Market Economy”.
