As part of an evaluation of the BMBF competition “Spitzencluster” (“leading-edge clusters”), which is conducted by a consortium of RWI, ISG, Joanneum Research and the University of Jena, ZEW analysis innovation indicators for a number of technology areas that represent the nine clusters being publicly funded within the competition. Using data from the Mannheim Innovation Panel, the study looks at innovation activities of firms belong in terms of innovation inputs and outputs, objectives and sources for innovation projects, innovation cooperation and public funding of innovation activities. In addition, internationalisation activities of firms as well as market structures are considered.
