AI at ZEW
Towards a Holistic and Secure AI Solution
At ZEW, we are establishing Artificial Intelligence not as a short-term technology but as a strategic pillar for research and for our service units. In an interdisciplinary working process, a dedicated working group has developed a local AI platform that is compliant with data protection regulations and combines data security with efficiency. The podcast “AI at ZEW” provides insights into the technical and organisational aspects of the platform’s implementation – from requirements gathering to evaluation and step-by-step introduction at the institute. What’s particularly exciting: an AI called “Dear AI”, which participates in the discussion itself and speaks from its perspective about opportunities, challenges and future visions.
Listen in and discover how we use AI at ZEW, combining responsi- bility, innovation and collaboration.

Podcast ZEW Annual Report (in German)
In a recent podcast discussion, ZEW’s AI Working Group presented its work over the past year and the current state of development. Noteworthy: A specially configured AI is integrated into the talk and is itself discussing the goals achieved and the way forward. The discussion focuses on the crucial shift from decentralised, often insecure use of Artificial Intelligence towards a centralised, institutional AI infrastructure. The working group comprises representatives from IT, research and administration who have jointly developed a platform that meets the security requirements for sensitive research data and streamlines administrative processes such as translations or research.
The podcast shows that apart from the technical architecture, key factors of the project’s success are the close integration of IT, human resources and scientific management, as well as a structured training that has to be completed before access is granted.
Initial challenges such as latency issues have been resolved; the focus is now on continued strategic development. Planned steps include the development of specialised AI agents for areas such as grant research, the integration of vision models, and the use of the platform to pose targeted questions to the organisation’s own extensive document repository.
The information provided in the podcast presents a picture of an AI strategy that is establishing itself not as a gimmick, but as a firm, integral part of the IT service portfolio, preparing ZEW for a data-driven future.
