KfW/ ZEW Start-up Panel

In order to determine the general conditions for founders, an empirically established, broad and continuously updateable state of knowledge is necessary. With the KfW/ ZEW Start-up Panel an instrument that meets these requirements was established. The KfW/ ZEW Start-up Panel originates from a cooperation of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), the KfW Bankengruppe (KfW banking group) and the business information service Creditreform. It follows the development of start-ups for several years and provides a wide range of firm-specific information. Each year approximately 6,000 firms are survey by computer assisted telephone interview. The gross sample of the annual survey is – stratified by sectors and foundation years – randomly drawn from the Manheim Enterprise Panel (MUP) which is maintained at ZEW in cooperation with Creditreform. The stratification of the sample enables sector-specific analyses for the small, but economically important group of High-Tech-Start-ups, as well as for firm foundations of non-technology sectors. The KfW/ ZEW Start-up panel, which will be surveyed and evaluated annually, shall improve the knowledge base for public assistance programs and stimulate foundation research in Germany.
