In a ceremony at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim, long-standing ZEW President Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz left office today. Prof. Dr. Clemens Fuest was inaugurated as his successor. From March 1, 2013 he will head ZEW together with the Director of Business and Administration, Thomas Kohl. read more

Theresia Bauer MdL, Minister of Science, Research and the Arts of the Federal State of Baden-Württemberg, has been elected new chairwoman of the Supervisory Board of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). Dr. h.c. Eggert Voscherau, chairman of the Supervisory Board of BASF SE, has been elected vice-chairman of ZEW's Supervisory Board. Bauer is the successor to Minister ret. Gerhard Stratthaus MdL, who had chaired the ZEW Supervisory Board since 2002. read more
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz received the Gustav Stolper Award 2012. Bestowed by the Verein für Socialpolitik (VfS), the award honours economists who considerably influence public debates with their research results. read more
In the business year 2011, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) was able to significantly increase its overall returns by approx. 2.6 million euros to 18.2 million euros. In particular third-party funding contributed to this success with an increase of 2.1 million euros. This information is provided by the recently published institute's annual report. read more

In today's meeting, the Supervisory Board of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim appointed Prof. Dr. Clemens Fuest, Oxford University, successor to ZEW President Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz. On March 1, 2013, Clemens Fuest will start at the top of ZEW, heading the institute as Director of Science and Research together with Thomas Kohl, Director of Business and Administration. Wolfgang Franz will retire and leave his position as ZEW President by the end of February 2013. read more
On January 1, 2012, a new research group started operating at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). The new research unit will investigate economic issues in the field of competition and regulation. A special focus lies on network industries such as the gas and electricity or the rail and aviation sectors. The objective of the new research group is to deal with topics which have recently become more important, such as the enforcement of cartel law under private law or the competitive implications of the German energy transition. read more

Prof. Dr. Andreas Löschel will monitor the change in Germany’s energy policy and critically analyse its development. As head of the research department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management” of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and Professor of Economics at Heidelberg University, he has been appointed by the German government as chairman of an expert group that will regularly evaluate the state of Germany’s energy transition. read more

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for 2011. This year, the award goes to Anna Watson from the University of Cambridge for her international model of economic activity, which explains the strong volatility of international trade as could be observed, for example, during the recent economic crisis. read more

In the business year 2010, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) Mannheim improved its results by half a million to 15.6 million euros. In particular, third-party funding strongly increased in 2010. The institute’s annual report provides this information. read more
Due to a extraordinary evaluation result, the Leibniz Association Senate has recommended to the German government to promote the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) Mannheim in the future as institute of national significance and macroeconomic policy interest. The senate stated that “ZEW is a extraordinary successful and promising institute of empiric economic research”. According to the senate, ZEW is well visible in Germany and abroad and is one of the leading economic research institutes in Europe. ZEW also sets scientific standards for economic policy advice in Germany. read more
PD Dr. Andreas Löschel is one of 36 climate researchers from Germany contributing their expertise to the IPCC Fifth Assessment Report which is to be published between June 2013 and March 2014. Löschel is head of the research department Environmental and Resource Economics at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW). He was appointed as lead author of the Fifth Assessment Report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC). read more

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for the seventh time. This year the award goes to Xuguang Sheng from the USA. Sheng is conducting research on the relation between economic uncertainty and the varying economic outlooks by experts. Shen is a lecturer at the American University in Washington D.C.. read more
The state of Baden-Wuerttemberg is financing a landmark project at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim to strengthen the economic top level research. In 2010 and 2011, the research programme "Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies" (SEEK) will be financed with a total of three million euro. read more
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz, President of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, and Chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts, now holds the Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship, which is awarded annually by the Karlsruher Universitätsgesellschaft and the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT). The Heinrich Hertz Guest Professorship is awarded to outstanding personalities in science, business, culture and politics for their contributions to research and society and pays tribute to the important physicist Heinrich Hertz who discovered electromagnetic waves. read more
In times of the global financial and economic crisis, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim continued to have stable profits in the business year 2009. The Annual Report 2009 indicates that the Institute’s profits have declined slightly to 15.09 million euro. However, external funds still account for 40 percent of ZEW’s financial resources, the same percentage as in the previous year. read more

Ernst Burgbacher, Secretary of State at the German Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology was appointed to the Supervisory Board at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim. He succeeds Ms. Dagmar Wöhrl, Secretary of State, ret., resigned from the ZEW Supervisory Board. Dr. Alexander Groß, head of department at the Federal Ministry of Economics and Technology, was appointed Mr. Burgbacher’s deputy. read more
Klaus Tappeser, General Director at Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts, was appointed to the Supervisory Board of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. His predecessor, Dr. Dietrich Birk, State Secretary at Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts, resigned from his office at the end of January 2010. Dr. Heribert Knorr, Head of Section at Baden-Wuerttemberg Ministry of Sciences, Research and the Arts, was appointed Mr Tappeser’s deputy in the ZEW Supervisory Board. read more

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for outstanding research papers to young researchers for the sixth time. Christina Felfe of St. Gallen University and Alexander M. Danzer of University of London share this year's award. Felfe receives the award for her analysis whether mothers return to their job after parental leave when the working atmosphere is good. Danzer receives the award for the empirical proof that employees cannot protect themselves from unexpected short-term wage cutbacks. read more

The back of the Berlin Wall was colourful! You can see this for yourself at the Centre of Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim until the 22 December 2009. The institute is featuring a photo exhibition by Piet Joehnk who captured colourful graffiti, comical slogans and surrealistic scenes from the western side of the Berlin Wall with his camera in 1986. The exhibition is open to the public Mondays to Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Admission is free. read more

Despite the recessive macro-economic situation and increasingly difficult conditions on national and international research markets, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim can look back on a very successful year 2008. As last year, the ZEW again improved its profitability in the financial year 2008. The annual result 2008 shows that the ZEW’s earnings rose to 15.48 million euro, notably exceeding last year’s result (14,47 million euro). read more
Wolfgang Franz, president of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and professor at the University of Mannheim, turns sixty-five on the 7th January 2009. He is known to the public as one of the five members of the German Council of Economic Experts. Since 2003 he has been a member of this body, of which he was part of before from 1994 to 1999. In 2008 he was appointed for a third term by the German Federal Government. Franz has an influence on the German economic policy both through his work in the Council of Economic Experts and his post as president at the ZEW. read more

In front of 570 invited guests she acknowledged the ZEW’s outstanding performances regarding research and politico-economic advice. The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for the fifth time. This year, Carlos D. Santos from Portugal received the research award for his paper about how sunk costs of investments in research and development affect the investment behaviour of a highly competitive industrial sector. Santos is economist and is currently finishing his PhD at the London School of Economics. read more
The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim, increased its earnings in the business year 2007. The earnings rose to 14.72 million Euros and thus notably exceeded previous year’s result (14.15 million Euros). Particularly the ZEW’s success in competition for research-funds and third-party funds contributed to the increase of its earnings. For instance, the ZEW successfully competed for research-funds from the Joint Initiative for Research and Innovation within the scientific community Leibniz-Gemeinschaft, and it was also successful in the hard-fought national and international competition for third-party funds for economic research and counselling projects. The ZEW’s third-party funds (6.4 million Euros) are on the highest level since the institute’s foundation in 1991. read more

Despite a tough national and international competition among economic research institutes for research contracts, ZEW was able to increase its third-party funding again, which now amounts to EUR 6.4 million. read more

As of October 1, 2007, Dr. Holger Bonin (39) takes up his position as head of the department “Labour Markets, Human Resources and Social Policy” at the Centre for European Economic Research GmbH (ZEW) in Mannheim.This research department is the second largest at ZEW with its 23 researchers. Bonin’s work is empirical and strongly practice-oriented; his research mainly focuses on the low-pay sector, the flexibility of wages and employment, the economic consequences of an ageing society and migration as well as on the employers’ willingness to take risks. read more

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim has awarded the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for the fourth time. This year the Portuguese Joao Vareda received the research award. Mr. Vareda is an economist currently finishing his Ph.D in economics at the New University of Lisbon (Universidade Nova). He received the Heinz König Young Scholar Award for a paper on how the obligation of former monopolists in telecommunication markets to grant their competitors access to the network infrastructure affects the former monopolists’ investment behaviour. read more
