Wolfgang Briglauer studied economics at the Johannes Kepler University (JKU) Linz. After completing his master studies, he proceeded with his doctoral studies specialising on industrial economics and applied econometrics. The doctoral thesis was supervised by Prof. Karl Aiginger and Prof. Christoph Weiss and successfully defended and completed with distinction in 2001.

From 2000 to 2009, Wolfgang Briglauer worked for the economics department of the Austrian Regulatory Authority for Broadcasting and Telecommunications (RTR-GmbH) in Vienna. He provided in-depth support with respect to methodological issues on market definition, market analysis and ex ante regulation. He conducted quantitative and qualitative research as well as major direct testimonies for the Telekom-Control Commission (TKK) as senior regulatory expert.

Wolfgang Briglauer joined the research institute for regulatory economics at the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) in 2009. His empirical work focused on the role of regulating new communications infrastructure (such as fibre-based broadband networks) and its impact on infrastructure investment and penetration rates. Teaching, thesis supervision, the organisation of scientific events, and team coordination were further responsibilities of his work.

From November 2013 to December 2017 Wolfgang Briglauer worked as a researcher in ZEW’s Research Group “Competition and Regulation”. He joined the Research Department “Digital Economy” as a Senior Researcher in January 2018. His research focuses on telecommunications and regulatory economics as well as competition policy. His work has been published in the leading field journals such as the Journal of Regulatory Economics, Review of Network Economics, Information Economics and Policy or Telecommunications Policy. In addition, Wolfgang Briglauer conducted several independent policy reports and is a lecturer in Applied Microeconomics at WU Wien.
