Gunter Grittmann

Gunter Grittmann is head of the service department "Information and Communication" at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim.

He studied Political Sciences and English at the University of Mannheim and in Newcastle upon Tyne/England and graduated with the First State Examination (1. Staatsexamen). After two years as a trainee-teacher he passed the Second State Examination (2. Staatsexamen) and was then qualified to work as a teacher in secondary schools, including teaching at A-level standard. He then worked on a research project in the English department and as a lecturer for English at the University of Mannheim. In 1988 he was accepted at the Holtzbrinck School of Journalism in Düsseldorf which is owned and operated by Handelsblatt Publishing Group. There he successfully completed a traineeship in economic journalism at some of Germany's leading business papers "Handelsblatt" and "WirtschaftsWoche". He then worked as an editor specialised in economics for the "Handelsblatt" where he focussed on occupational and educational topics as well as the labour markets for highly qualified manpower.

He gained experience in project management when working for BTS Broadcast Television Systems in Darmstadt, a leading enterprise for TV broadcasting and recording techniques. For BTS he developed a German-English magazine for employees and customers and as an editor-in-chief was responsible for the production of the first issues. He also contributed to the development of a PR-strategy to further the diffusion of HDTV-technology.

In 1991 he entered Transmedia in Mannheim, a publishing house specialised in occupational topics and the labour markets. As an editor for the company's print media, he focussed on enterprise and industry reporting, investigations in new professional profiles, and the writing of labour market reports for highly qualified manpower. He also developed a website for a magazine produced on behalf of the Federal Employment Office.

Gunter Grittmann joined ZEW in May 1997 and has been working there ever since.
