Professor Achim Wambach, PhD, has been the President of the Mannheim Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) since April 2016.

Before joining ZEW, Achim Wambach was the Director of the Institute for Economic Policy (iwp) at the University of Cologne and Director of the European Centre for Liberal Professions, University of Cologne.

Achim Wambach studied Physics and Mathematics in Cologne before obtaining his PhD at the University of Oxford. After finishing his Master of Science degree in Economics at the London School of Economics, he completed his habilitation thesis in Economics at the University of Munich. Between 2001 and 2005, he was professor of Economics at the University of Erlangen-Nürnberg.

In 2014, Achim Wambach was appointed a member of the Monopolies Commission, and in March 2016, he was elected the Commission's chairman. Currently, he is chairman of the Management Board of the German Economic Association (Verein für Socialpolitik). Wambach has been appointed new member of the Federal Insurance Office's Scientific Advisory Board for the Further Development of the Risk Structure Compensation Scheme. His appointment runs from February 2017 until June 2018. He is a member of the Steering Committee of the German National Platform for Electric Mobility (NPE) as well as a member of the Advisory Board of the State Government of Baden-Württemberg for Sustainable Development. Furthermore, he is a member of the Academic Advisory Board of the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Energy. From 2012 to 2015, he held the Board's chair.

His fields of interest include competition policy issues as well as information problems in markets. His research draws on methods of market design and industrial economics.
