The coronavirus pandemic has led to abrupt changes, forcing companies to adapt their established work processes and develop new solutions. Against this background, ZEW Mannheim and the Stifterverband jointly organised an online workshop on the impact of the current crisis on the German innovation system, which took place on 28 January 2021. Five years ago, Angela Merkel coined the now famous phrase “Wir schaffen das” (“We can do it”) in the midst of a crisis situation, as more and more migrants made their journey to Europe on the Balkan route. But what can the countries that take in immigrants do to integrate them? On 17 and 18 December 2018, ZEW and the Collaborative Research Center SFB 884 “Political Economy of Reforms” jointly organised the workshop “Understanding Policy Preferences Using Experimental Methods”. On 12 and 13 October 2018, around 30 international researchers attended the 15th Matching in Practice workshop at ZEW in Mannheim to discuss theoretical and applied approaches to make markets without money fairer and more efficient.

Alongside new technologies such as electric mobility and services such as ride-sharing or carpooling, targeted policy instruments such as road pricing schemes need to be developed further in order to reduce emissions in the transport sector. This is a key result of the ZEW workshop which took place on 13–14 September 2018 in Mannheim and featured 35 experts from the realms of academia, politics and business practice. At the same time the workshop marked the conclusion of the research project “Carbon-Neutral Courier Services” (CO2URIER) funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.
