The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim hosts the German REBOUND closing conference titled “Der Rebound-Effekt von Energieeffizienz-Verbesserungen: Viel Wind um Nichts oder Grund zur Sorge?” (The Rebound Effect of Improvements in Energy Efficiency: Hot Air or Cause for Concern?) on October 18, 2013. Over the past three years, the BMBF-sponsored REBOUND research project examined whether increases in energy efficiency are an appropriate means to achieve energy and climate policy goals. Focusing on households in Germany, the ZEW researchers investigated if increased energy efficiency solely leads to more consumption and thus to increasing energy use. They also examined the reasons of the rebound effect and possible countermeasures. The project’s findings will be presented and discussed at the conference. Up to 40 interested persons can participate in the event (the conference language will be German). Participation is free of charge; registration deadline is on September 30, 2013.

    Environmental Policy and Environmental Protection

On September 27, 2013, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim will host a closing conference with the title "The Global Market for Environmental Technologies: Do We Need a New Pioneering Policy? (Der Weltmarkt für Umwelttechnologien: Brauchen wir eine neue Vorreiterpolitik?)". In the past, Germany’s pioneering role in environmental policy making was set up on presumable first mover advantages. Against the backdrop of the experiences from the German solar industry, this theory has been called into question. Within the framework of the “Economics for Sustainability” funding priority of the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF), ZEW’s project LEAD MARKETS examined concepts on first and second mover strategies. The findings of the case studies and the resulting policy strategies will be presented and discussed at the conference. Up to 40 interested persons may participate in the event (the conference language will be German). Participation is free of charge, registration deadline is on August 30, 2013.

The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the Centre for International Climate and Environmental Research Oslo (CICERO) host a conference on consumption-based approaches in climate policy in Mannheim on March 6 and 7, 2013. Despite the emergence of climate policy in different parts of the world, global emissions are still increasing. Against this background, there are calls for more comprehensive approaches to climate policy, which focus on emissions embodied in consumption. The overall goal of these approaches is to alter current emission consumption patterns and to initiate the transition towards a low carbon future. This two day event brings together selected renowned researchers in order to explore new directions in consumption-based approaches in climate policy. We invite interested participants (non-presenters) to register online no later than March 1, 2013. Please note that only a limited number of non-presenters will be able to attend. The conference fee is EUR 135, covering conference materials, coffee breaks, and lunch on both days.
