    Carta was a visiting researcher at ZEW's Research Group "International Distribution and Redistribution" on April 23 and 24, 2015. She is an economist at the Directorate General for Economics, Statistics and Research of the Bank of Italy, Labour Market Division, in Rome. Her research interests include public and labour economics. During her stay, she held a ZEW Research Seminar on the effects of commuting times on couples' labour supply. Furthermore, the possibilities of future research cooperation were jointly discussed.

    How family-friendly is the municipal infrastructure in North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany? How can family policy respond to the challenges of a modern society? Having been appointed to the committee of enquiry for the future of family policy by the German FDP state fraction, Professor Holger Bonin, head of the ZEW Research Department "Labour Markets, Human Resources and Social Policy" will lend his expertise to resolving such issues. Together with four other experts and twelve deputies, Bonin will analyse the current situation of families and develop recommendations for a more family-friendly environment. The commission started its work in January 2015.

    Nobody knows what the world of work will look like in the future. What is sure, however, is that increasing digitalisation and the crosslinking of business processes and communication channels are already changing the way we work. That is why the Federal Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (BMAS) has established, in the course of dialogues, the advisory board "Arbeiten 4.0" (Labour 4.0). Prof. Dr Irene Bertschek, Head of the ZEW Research Department "Information and Communication Technologies", has been appointed to the committee's panel of experts. Until the end of 2016, she will work hand in hand with further representatives from the fields of science and practice, as well as with BMAS to identify where action is needed and to find solutions that will shape the digital and interconnected working world of the future. The advisory board started its work on 22nd April, 2015.

    Schlenker was a visiting researcher at ZEW’s Research Department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management" from March 30 to April 2, 2015. He is Assistant Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs and the Earth Institute of Columbia University in New York. His research interests include the economics of climate change, water rights, and their impact on agricultural output, as well as models of exhaustible resources. During his stay, he held a ZEW Research Seminar on the impact of climate change on agriculture. Furthermore, future research cooperation possibilities were discussed in bilateral meetings.

He is researcher at the Research Institute for Regulatory Economics of the Vienna University of Economics and Business (WU) in Austria. His research interests are in the fields of regulatory economics, international migration, foreign direct investment, and applied econometrics. During his stay, he worked together with ZEW researchers in a project on unbundling of distribution networks. Furthermore, he held a ZEW Research Seminar entitled "Vertical Disintegration in the European Electricity Sector: Empirical Evidence on Lost Synergies".

    Professor Lawrence White, PhD, was a visiting researcher at ZEW's Research Group "Competition and Regulation" on March 4 and 5, 2015. He is Robert Kavesh Professor of Economics and Deputy Chair of the Economics Department at New York University's Leonard N. Stern School of Business, US. Among other books, he is a co-author of "The Antitrust Revolution". His primary research areas of interest include financial regulation, antitrust, network industries, international banking, and applied microeconomics. During his stay at ZEW, he held a lecture on credit rating agencies at the Mannheim Competition Policy Forum.

    Prof. Dr. Friedrich Heinemann

    Prof. Dr. Friedrich Heinemann has been appointed as extraordinary professor for macroeconomics at Heidelberg Ruprecht-Karls University. Heinemann is Head of the Research Department "Corporate Taxation and Public Finance" at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. For several years, he has already been associate professor for research and teaching at Heidelberg University. He studied macroeconomics and history at the University of Münster, at the London School of Economics, and at the University of Mannheim where he became a Dr. rer. pol. In 2010 he qualified as a professor (Habilitation) at Heidelberg University. His research interests are empirical finance and especially issues concerning European integration, federalism as well as tax- and fiscal policy.
