The international workshop is located within the framework of the research programme "Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies" (SEEK).     Within the ZEW research programme "Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies“ (SEEK), the state of Baden-Württemberg is funding international cooperation between researchers of all economic disciplines. Therefore, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) welcomes the submission of project proposals. The deadline for project proposals is January 30, 2012. Projects must be carried out in close cooperation between ZEW researchers and international project partners. For each project, the budget requested may be up to 200,000 euros for a duration of 12 to 18 months.

    The third competition round of the SEEK research programme was successfully concluded with the approval of seven research projects. The research teams of the projects, which will be funded under the programme, will now start their work. Altogether, 23 project proposals were developed by ZEW employees in cooperation with internationally renowned researchers. The proposals were evaluated by the scientific board of the SEEK research programme which consists of international researchers.

    The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the Catholic University Leuven (K.U. Leuven) are pleased to announce the joint workshop "The Economics of Public Support to the European Car Industry", scheduled for May 3, 2012, in Brussels, Belgium. The workshop takes place within the framework of the international research programme "Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies" (SEEK), which is funded by the State of Baden-Württemberg over five years and carried out by ZEW. We will present preliminary results of the ongoing SEEK project "Fostering Competitiveness of the European Car Industry", which investigates the effects of public support of the European car industry on competition. Furthermore, the workshop brings together various stakeholders of the European car industry, representatives of EU institutions and national administrations, industry, and academia to discuss the issue of public support to the European car industry. We invite interested participants to register by sending an e-mail to seekcarworkshop@zew.de no later than April 20, 2012. Please note that only a limited number of participants will be able to attend.

    From March 5-10, 2012, Paul Beaudry and Franck Portier were visiting researchers at the ZEW Research Group "Growth and Business Cycles". Paul Beaudry is professor of economics and holds the Canada Research Chair in Macroeconomics at the University of British Columbia. Franck Portier is professor of economics at the Toulouse School of Economics at the University Toulouse I. During their stay, they were working on the joint SEEK research project "Anticipated Technology Shocks in the European Economies". Furthermore, they participated in the jointly organised SEEK/CEPR Workshop on the role of news, sentiment, and confidence in business cycle fluctuations.

    For the opening of the second conference of the research programme "Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies" (SEEK) on March 9 and 10, 2012, in Mannheim, ZEW President Wolfgang Franz was delighted to welcome approximately 200 international participants from the areas of science, politics, and the economy. The conference, which focuses on the key challenges of an eco-friendly economic growth, was opened by Minister of the Environment, Climate Protection and the Energy Sector of the State of Baden-Württemberg Franz Untersteller. Keynote speaker of the first conference day was Klaus Töpfer, Executive Director of the Institute for Advanced Sustainability Studies (IASS) and former Executive Director of the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP).

    Within the framework of the research programme "Strengthening Efficiency and Competitiveness in the European Knowledge Economies", the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), Mannheim (Germany), and the Johannes Kepler University, Linz (Austria), organized a workshop on "Entry, Pricing, and Consumer Search in Online Markets". The workshop's objective was to discuss recent scientific contributions to questions related to the economics of online markets as well as firms' strategies and consumers' search behaviour in online markets. Fourteen speakers from international universities presented their on-going theoretical and empirical research in the field of online markets.
