    Economics of Science

    The inaugural meeting "The Economics of Science" takes place at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim on May 31 and June 1, 2012. The meeting (in German language) is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) and is jointly organised as a workshop with the Project Management Agency of DLR (PT-DLR). The goal of the inaugural meeting is to discuss recent topics of the economics of science and to get a picture of the projects funded by the BMBF within the research theme "The Economics of Science". Paula Stephan, PhD, professor at Georgia State University, Atlanta (USA), will hold the inaugural lecture. Up to 100 persons may participate. Participation is free of charge, subscription deadline is on May 25, 2012.

    On November 22, 2011, the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the Brussels-based think tank Bruegel organised a workshop on "Europe's Way to a Low-Carbon Economy" in the representation of the state of Baden-Württemberg in Brussels. Jos Delbeke, PhD, the European Commission's Director-General for Climate Action, Prof. Jean Pisani-Ferry, Director of Bruegel, Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz, President of ZEW and Chairman of the German Council of Economic Experts, Dr. Georg Zachmann, Researcher at Bruegel, and Prof. Dr. Andreas Löschel, Head of the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management”, were the speakers. Representatives of the EU Commission, of public institutions, of the industrial and the financial sector as well as researchers attended the workshop.

    On 22 November 2010, ZEW held a workshop on “The Economics of Green IT”. The term “green IT” refers to energy-saving strategies in production and use of information technology as well as IT-based innovations which aim to reduce the energy consumption of other devices and production processes, improve power supply systems and make energy markets more efficient. While green IT has been widely debated in the industry, economic researchers are yet to develop a systematic research approach in this area. The goal of the workshop, therefore, was to encourage scientific debate over green IT in economics and other related disciplines. The workshop was organised jointly by the ZEW Research Departments “Information and Communication Technologies” and “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management”.

    From 15 to 17 June 2010, ZEW hosted its Summer Workshop for Young Economist for the twelfth year in a row. This year the event was run by the ZEW Research Department “International Finance and Financial Management”. The focus of the workshop was on “Expectations and Forming Expectations on the Financial Markets”. ZEW received sponsorship for the event from the Stiftung Geld und Währung.

    Keynote speakers: Lena Edlund (Columbia University), Lawrence Kahn (Cornell University) and Michael Keane (University of Technology Sydney) The workshop focusses on theoretical and empirical research on gender in the labour market. This includes: analysis of gender differences in pre-market human capital, experience, seniority, occupations, earnings, wealth, training and mobility; changing gender roles in changing economies; theories of discrimination, the family as an economic unit, the role of marriage markets; time allocation; policies affecting paid work and family; the impact of welfare reforms on single mothers; gender differences in different countries.     The workshop on 'Competition in Transport Markets' aims at providing a forum for scientists as well as practioneers to discuss contemporary topics and trends in the area of competition and regulation in transport markets. Although the workshop contains presentations on all transport modes, it has a particular focus on competition problems in the airline industry. The keynote speakers of the workshop are Kenneth Button (George Mason University, Fairfax), David Gillen (University of British Columbia, Vancouver) and Peter Forsyth (Monash University, Melbourne).
