Against the backdrop of the current political situation, migration and asylum are hotly debated issues in Germany and Europe. Professor Holger Bonin, head of the ZEW Research Department "Labour Markets, Human Resources and Social Policy", was appointed to the Migration Council as a labour market expert in December 2015. The council brings together researchers from various disciplines. Council members contribute their expertise to place the debate about migration, asylum and integration in Germany on a more objective, fact-based footing.
Professor Sascha Steffen, head of the Research Department "International Finance and Financial Management" at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), has officially taken over the professorship for financial markets in the Area Finance of the University of Mannheim Business School. Steffen, a distinguished financial market expert, is thus once again wholly active in Mannheim.
Carlo Cambini, PhD, was a visiting researcher in ZEW's Research Group "Competition and Regulation" from September 21 to 23, 2015. He is Professor of Industrial Organisation at Politecnico di Torino (Italy). His research interests lie in the field of industrial economics with a special focus on competition policy and regulation in regulated sectors. During his stay, he conferred with ZEW researchers on two ongoing research projects on investment incentives of telecommunications companies in the development of new broadband infrastructures.
Thorsten Martin was a visiting researcher in ZEW's Research Department "Corporate Taxation and Public Finance” on September 14 and 15, 2015. He is a doctoral researcher at the Chair for Public Economics at the University of Potsdam. His research interest lies in the field of applied spatial econometrics. The purpose of Thorsten Martin’s research stay was the planning of a joint project on tax competition between municipalities with ZEW researchers.
Carreira, PhD, was a visiting researcher in ZEW’s Research Department “Industrial Economics and International Management” in the research area "Firm Foundations and the Growth of Start-Ups" from June 15 to July 15, 2015. He is Assistant Professor at the University of Coimbra in Portugal and member of its research unit “Group for Monetary and Financial Studies”. His research interests lie in the field of market entries and exits, their impact on productivity development and regional growth as well as international competitiveness. During his stay, he worked together with ZEW researchers on a comparison of the industry dynamics in Portugal and Germany.
Hinnosaar, PhD, was a visiting researcher in ZEW’s Research Department "Information and Communication Technologies" from July 1 to 4, 2015. She is Assistant Professor in Economics at the Collegio Carlo Alberto in Torino. Her research interests lie in the fields of behavioural economics and industrial organisation. During her stay in Mannheim, she worked together with ZEW researchers on the SEEK project "Side Effects of Economic Crises in Europe and Provision of Online Public Goods".
Prof. Dr. Polk was a visiting researcher in ZEW's Research Group "Competition and Regulation" on July 2 and 3, 2015. He is Professor of Economics at the Berlin School of Economics and Law. His research interests lie in the fields of industrial economics and competition policy issues, of which he also has first-hand experience from his previous position in the German Federal Cartel Office. During his visit to ZEW, a cooperation in the field of cartel research was agreed upon.
Chareyron is a visiting researcher at ZEW's Research Department "Labour Markets, Human Resources and Social Policy" from May 4 to July 8, 2015. He is a PhD Student at the University of Paris Est. His research interests lie in the fields of social transfers, labour force participation, and poverty, focusing on social programmes and their effects on labour force participation. During his stay at ZEW, he evaluates the introduction of the increased French minimum income (Revenu de Solidarité Active, RSA).

Sara Amoroso was a visiting researcher at ZEW's Research Department "Industrial Economics and International Management" from May 18-23, 2015. She is researcher at the Institute for Prospective Technological Studies (IPTS) of the European Commission's Joint Research Centre (JRC) in Brussels, Belgium. Her research interests are in the areas of empirical industrial economics, innovation economics and micro-econometrics. During her stay at ZEW, she examined the impact of foreign direct investment on start-up activity.
