Professor Catherine Florentz, Vice-President for Research and Doctoral Education at the University of Strasbourg, ZEW President Professor Achim Wambach and ZEW Director Thomas Kohl signed the cooperation agreement in Strasbourg.

    ZEW President Achim Wambach demands more efficiency in climate policy by the government.

    At her annual New Year’s address, the German Chancellor Angela Merkel renewed her commitment to climate action: “I will do everything in my power to ensure that Germany does its part – ecologically, economically, societally – to get climate change under control.” Climate policy is becoming increasingly important in Germany. In August 2019, the Cabinet passed the Structural Development Act for German coal-mining regions; three months later, it rolled out a new climate bill. What is more, federal and state authorities recently agreed on a timetable for phasing out coal.

The event is organised by the Leibniz ScienceCampus MannheimTaxation, a joint initiative of the University of Mannheim and ZEW. This workshop focuses on the nexus between taxation and informality, how individuals and firms operate in both formal and informal sectors, and how their actions are shaped by tax systems.

    Barbara Boggiano is a visiting researcher in ZEW’s Research Department “Labour Markets and Human Resources” on a scholarship from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) from 1 October 2019 to 31 July 2020. She is a PhD candidate in economics at the University of Leicester, UK. Her research interests lie in the fields of applied microeconometrics, as well as labour and health economics.

    Be it the climate emergency, Green Deal, climate conference, or the climate package: Germany is taking climate policy seriously. On 13 January 2020, Peter Altmaier, Federal Minister of Economic Affairs and Energy, gave a talk at ZEW Mannheim about where the Federal Republic of Germany stands in terms of climate policy, the energy transition, and how it should all progress. Within the context of the research project “Dialogue on the Economics of Climate Change”, Altmaier spoke at ZEW as part of its First-Hand Information on Economic Policy event series before an audience of some 220 guests from the realms of business, science and society. How to shape a successful energy transition in Germany, how democratic climate policy is implemented nationally and internationally, and what role Germany has to play in all of this were focal points of the talk.

    ZEW study shows growing competitiveness of Russia and other emerging economies.

    Irrespective of political tensions and concerns about democracy and the rule of law, recent years have seen Turkey, Russia and China expand their attractiveness as business locations. This was one conclusion of the “Länderindex Familienunternehmen – Emerging Markets” (“Country Index for Family Businesses – Emerging Markets”), a study which ZEW Mannheim carried out for the Foundation for Family Businesses. The study ranks Russia in first place, followed by Turkey and China.

    Scientists from ZEW Mannheim will once again be attending the ASSA Annual Meeting held in the United States in 2020. Taking place from 3 to 5 January in San Diego, the 2020 edition of the event is set to welcome over 13,000 participants. This makes the ASSA Annual Meeting the most important conference in the world for economists. The conference is jointly organised by the American Economic Association (AEA) and the Allied Social Science Association (ASSA).

    Ge Yin was a visiting researcher in ZEW’s Department “Economics of Innovation and Industrial Dynamics” from 4 November to 6 December 2019. She is a doctoral researcher at the National School of Development (NSD) at Peking University in China. Furthermore, she visited Harvard Kennedy School at Harvard University in Cambridge, United States, for one year. Her research interests are on innovation economics and development economics, with a particular focus on topics concerning patent quality.
