    Symposia

    In cooperation with the Central Institute of Mental Health (ZI), ZEW hosted a symposium on “Autonomy and Flexibility in Scientific Administration – Best Practice” on 18 October 2010. The event was attended by over 85 business executives and company directors, experts and decision-makers from universities, research institutions and university hospitals as well as representatives from funding bodies, who discussed a number of issues, such as what adjustments research institutions in Germany can make in order to continue to compete in the international arena.

    It’s just a typical Monday morning in the year 2015. In universities across the land economists are sitting with anticipation at their computers, counting the minutes until 10:00 a.m., when the latest weekly rankings will be available at the Financial Times. As usual, the server is overloaded and initially breaks down under the storm of requests. But after several minutes of excruciating delay, the hit parade is finally online. For each researcher and faculty, an exhaustive list of peer-reviewed publications and citations can be viewed, precisely subdivided into A, B and – horribile dictum – C journals, along with a competitive ranking, updated for the week.

    Sebastian Peyer is a Visiting Researcher at the ZEW Research Department "Industrial Economics and International Management" from 18 to 22 October. He is currently conducting research on private enforcement of competition law at the Centre for Competition Policy (CCP) at the University of East Anglia in Norwich (UK). While visiting ZEW, Sebastian Peyer is concerned with the empirical analysis of data sets on private enforcement of competition law in Germany.

    From October 5th, 2010, to January 3rd, 2011, Weiqi Tang and Xu Dong from the "Center for Energy, Economy and Strategy Study" (CEESS) of Fudan University in Shanghai, China, will join the "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management" Research Department as visiting researchers. Their Research Visit is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Education and Research (BMBF) within the national programme "Funding of Scientific and Technological Cooperation with China". They are visiting ZEW in order to establish a co-operation between the institutes.

    From September, 1st, 2010 to August, 31rd, 2011, Chu Wei is working as International Climate Protection Fellow of the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation in the Research Department "Environmental and Resource Economics" His host is PD Dr. Andreas Löschel. Chu Wei is an Assistant Professor at Zhejiang Sci-Tech University, Hangzhou, China. During his stay at ZEW, he will examine the impact of energy efficiency on CO2 emission, and evaluate China’s energy and climate policy.

    Riccardo Cappelli was a visiting researcher in ZEW's Research Department “Industrial Economics and International Management” from 1 October to 15 December 2010. At the time, Cappelli was working on his doctorate at the University of Insubria (Varese, Italy) where his supervisor was Professor Fabio Montobbio. His primary research focus is in the area of empirical research into innovation and patents. During his research visit, Cappelli looked closely at the persistence of obstacles to innovation and the effects of innovation processes in firms as part of a joint research project.

    Germany's Federal Minister of Finance Dr. Wolfgang Schäuble gave a speech on fiscal and financial market policy after the crisis at ZEW on 20 September 2010. Within the lecture series "Wirtschafspolitik aus erster Hand" which provides first-hand information on current economic policy, ZEW president Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz welcomed around 400 guests to this event.

    Bettina Klose was a visiting researcher in the ZEW Research Department "Industrial Economics and International Management” from 13 to 17 September 2010. She is a post-doctoral researcher at the Institute for Strategy and Business Economics at the University of Zurich. Her research interests include auction theory, industrial economics and political economy. She completed her doctorate in this area at Purdue University in August 2010 under the supervision of Dan Kovenock. During her research visit at ZEW, she examined the efficiency of an auction-like mechanism used to set reference prices for prescription drugs in Denmark.

    Dates and News

    For the second time, 19 financial experts from China and Vietnam are visiting the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim. From September until November, they are participating in an advanced training course in the field of macroeconomics. The group of financial experts consists among others of employees at the Ministry of Finance in China and Vietnam, the State Bank of Vietnam, the Ministry of Planning and Investment in Vietnam and the Chinese Ministry of Commerce. In cooperation with external researchers and practitioners, ZEW researchers impart further knowledge in the fields of fiscal and monetary policy, labour and financial markets as well as trade policy.

    Ramiro Parrado was a visiting researcher in the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management” from 10 September to 31 December 2010. At the time of his visit, he was a researcher at the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei (FEEM) in Venice and writing his doctorate under the supervision of Professor Carlo Carraro at the University Ca’ Foscari in Venice. His research interests include the economics of climate change, climate policy and computable general equilibrium (CGE) models. During his time at ZEW, he conducted research on technological change using CGE models.
