    On 14-15 October 2011, the Leibniz Network’s third interdisciplinary conference “Real Estate Markets and Capital Markets” (ReCapNet) will be held at ZEW in Mannheim. ReCapNet examines the interactions between real estate markets and capital markets. The conference, which is held in English, is aimed at researchers from all disciplines involved in research related to the topic of the conference.

    ZEW has been working to strengthen its international presence in a variety of ways: by engaging in research projects that focus on global issues, by acquiring clients from all over the world, and by maintaining contacts with outstanding researchers in many nations. Thomas Kohl, the Director of Business and Administration at ZEW, explains the progress that has been made in the internationalisation of the Institute’s activities. Thomas Kohl has been a member of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) since 1992. Initially, he worked as human resources director and later took over responsibility for the entire service department. In 2001 he was named Deputy Business Director at ZEW. Since 2004, he has been the Director of Business and Administration at ZEW.

    Cooperation | Delegation

    On 7 June 2011, a delegation from Argentina visited ZEW. The professors of the National University of Misiones and the National University of Cuyo exchanged views with ZEW employees on the institute’s key research interests and discussed a possible future cooperation in joint research projects. The delegation was accompanied by an employee of Baden-Württemberg International, the Agency for International Economic and Scientific Cooperation of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.

    Climate

    Predictions about future economic growth are not the only ones fraught with significant uncertainties. The natural sciences are also susceptible to errors resulting from erroneous predictions – and perhaps with even more dramatic consequences. Epidemiologists, for example, promulgated horror scenarios regarding the fatalities that would result from the impending spread of mad cow disease and swine flu. Afterwards, thank God, we learned that their predictions had been off the mark.

    Basel III | Financial crisis

    On 31 May 2011, Prof. Dr. Hannes Rehm, spokesman of the German Federal Agency for Financial Market Stabilisation, gave a speech on the causes and consequences of the financial crisis within the Mannheim Economics and Currency Dialogues series at ZEW. ZEW President Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz welcomed around 150 guests to the event. The Mannheim Economics and Currency Dialogues series focuses on topics regarding the banking industry and is supported by the association of banks Rhein-Neckar Mannheim (Bankenvereinigung Rhein-Neckar Mannheim).

    The second round of competition of the SEEK research programme was successfully concluded with the selection of eight research projects. Now the research teams of the projects, which will be funded within the programme, are going to begin their work. Altogether, 25 project proposals were developed by ZEW employees in cooperation with internationally renowned researchers. The proposals were externally evaluated by the scientific board of the SEEK research programme.

    From 23 to 28 May 2011 Paul Beaudry and Franck Portier were visiting researchers at the ZEW research group "Growth and Business Cycles". During their stay, they were working on a joint research project under the SEEK Research Programme entitled "Anticipated Technology Shocks in the European Economies". Paul Beaudry is professor of economics and holds the Canada Research Chair in Macroeconomics at the University of British Columbia. His areas of research cover macroeconomics, technical change, labour economics and globalisation. Franck Portier is professor of economics at the Toulouse School of Economics at the University Toulouse I. His research interests lie in the fields of macroeconomics, growth and international economics, energy, environment and agriculture.

    At the conference of Section B of the Leibniz Association, held at ZEW in Mannheim at the end of May, the new spokesperson and the deputy spokesperson of the section were duly elected. The current spokesperson, ZEW President Professor Wolfgang Franz, will be leaving the position as scheduled after two years. Prof. Dr. Heiderose Kilper, Director of the Leibniz Institute for Regional Development and Structural Planning (Leibniz-Institut für Regionalentwicklung und Strukturplanung) in Erkner, will take office as spokesperson in the middle of this year. Prof. Dr. Thomas Glauben, Executive Director of the Leibniz Institute of Agricultural Development in Central and Eastern Europe (Leibniz-Institut für Agrarentwicklung in Mittel- und Osteuropa) in Halle (Saale), will assume the office of deputy spokesperson.

    The paper "Can Regional Transfers Buy Public Support? Evidence from EU Structural Policy", written at ZEW, won the Klaus Liebscher Award of the Oesterreichische Nationalbank (OeNB), the central bank of the Republic of Austria. The award was presented to the author Steffen Osterloh by the OeNB President, Claus J. Raidl, at the 39th Economics Conference of the OeNB in Vienna.

    From 9 to 18 May 2011, Patrice Bougette was a visiting researcher at the ZEW research department "Industrial Economics and International Management". Mr Bougette is an Assistant Professor at the University of Nice where he is conducting research in competition policy in general with special focus on the optimal design of merger remedies. During his research visit at ZEW, Mr Bougette dealt with the ex-post evaluation of a horizontal merger.
