Stefan Mappus, Minister President of Baden-Württemberg, and Márie Geoghegan-Quinn, EU Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science, gave the opening speeches at the conference.

On May 1, 2011, all persons from Central and Eastern Europe will gain the unrestricted right to work in another EU nation. Professor Wolfgang Franz talks about the implications of full freedom of movement for the German labour market, as discussed in the annual report of the German Council of Economic Experts. Professor Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz has been the President of ZEW since 1997 and is a professor of economics at the University of Mannheim. He also directs the research group Growth and Business Cycles at ZEW. His main fields of activity are macroeconomics, labour markets, and empirical economic research. Since 2003, Franz has once again been a member of the German Council of Economic Experts, which advises the German government on questions of economic policy. Since 2009, Franz has been the chairman of this body.

Prof. Dr. Irene Bertschek, head of the ZEW research group Information and Communication Technologies, has been appointed professor of economics with a focus on applied empirical economic research at the University of Mannheim. The position is attached to the Department of Economics within the Faculty of Law and Economics. It is partly funded by the Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz Scientific Community.

The German Federal Government appointed Prof. Dr. Lars Feld to the German Council of Economic Experts. He succeeds Prof. Dr. Wolfgang Wiegard from the University of Regensburg, who is leaving the council. Prof. Dr. Lars Feld is director of the Walter Eucken Institute at the University of Freiburg as well as a long-standing Research Associate at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW).

From 31 January until 4 March 2011, Nicolas Classen is Visiting Researcher at the ZEW Research Department "Industrial Economics and International Management" within the STRIKE network funded by COST. At ZEW, Classen, a PhD student at Maastricht University, will be conducting research on the topic "Innovation in family-owned businesses" along with the Mannheim Innovation Panel.
