    From July 17 to 27, 2011, Brant Morefield was visiting researcher in the ZEW research department "Labour Markets, Human Resources and Social Policy". Brant is a Senior Analyst/PhD Economist for Abt Associates Inc., Domestic Health Division and holds a PhD in Economics from the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. His research has investigated the evolution of health and human capital over time. Currently, he is researching nursing home qualities in the US. During his research stay at ZEW, Brant was studying the effects of parental health shocks on children's non-cognitive skill development.

    Whenever the question arises of how best to deal with government deficits, businesses and their professional associations often identify subsidies as the place to start. Yet, instead of calling for subsidies to be phased out, they deliberately speak of the need "to put subsidies under greater scrutiny" or "separate the wheat from the chaff." The reason for this is clear. Demanding the elimination of valuable subsidies for one’s own industry is taboo. And it would be hypocritical for one industry to speak out against government subsidies while still supporting them for itself.

    From July 11 to 15, 2011, Professor Norman Gemmell was visiting researcher at the ZEW research department "Corporate Taxation and Public Finance". Norman Gemmell taught and researched at the University of Nottingham until 1999 when he became Emeritus Professor and Professorial Research Fellow in the School of Economics. He is currently on leave as Chief Economist at The Treasury, New Zealand. While visiting ZEW, Norman Gemmell focused on issues related to fiscal policy and long-run growth.

    From 20 to 24 June 2011 and from 4 to 15 July 2011, Wolfram Schlenker is visiting researcher at the ZEW research department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management". He is Assistant Professor at the School of International and Public Affairs of Columbia University, New York. His research interests include the economics of climate change, water rights, and their impact on agricultural output, as well as models of exhaustible resources with endogenous discoveries. He holds a PhD in Agricultural and Resource Economics from the University of California, Berkeley (2003). During his research stay Wolfram Schlenker is working on renewable energies in Germany.

    On 14-15 October 2011, the Leibniz Network’s third interdisciplinary conference “Real Estate Markets and Capital Markets” (ReCapNet) will be held at ZEW in Mannheim. ReCapNet examines the interactions between real estate markets and capital markets. The conference, which is held in English, is aimed at researchers from all disciplines involved in research related to the topic of the conference.

    ZEW has been working to strengthen its international presence in a variety of ways: by engaging in research projects that focus on global issues, by acquiring clients from all over the world, and by maintaining contacts with outstanding researchers in many nations. Thomas Kohl, the Director of Business and Administration at ZEW, explains the progress that has been made in the internationalisation of the Institute’s activities. Thomas Kohl has been a member of the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) since 1992. Initially, he worked as human resources director and later took over responsibility for the entire service department. In 2001 he was named Deputy Business Director at ZEW. Since 2004, he has been the Director of Business and Administration at ZEW.

    Cooperation | Delegation

    On 7 June 2011, a delegation from Argentina visited ZEW. The professors of the National University of Misiones and the National University of Cuyo exchanged views with ZEW employees on the institute’s key research interests and discussed a possible future cooperation in joint research projects. The delegation was accompanied by an employee of Baden-Württemberg International, the Agency for International Economic and Scientific Cooperation of the federal state of Baden-Württemberg.
