    In the question of how to handle the eurozone crisis, the sole contribution offered by numerous experts is to condemn virtually all of the solutions currently being floated. No alternative solutions are suggested, apart from reiteration of the need for programmes of fiscal consolidation and adjustment in the embattled countries at Europe's periphery. Such fiscal measures are of course essential – this is beyond doubt. But if the markets remain unconvinced by such efforts, what then?

    Conferences

    The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) in Mannheim takes part in this year's Baden-Württemberg Sustainability Days. On April 20, 2012, the ZEW Research Department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management” organises the event "What is Sustainability from an Economic Point of View?" (in German) for pupils from year 10 upwards. Short presentations, discussions, and game theory experiments are intended to give pupils an understanding of approaches to sustainability in economics. Pupils will also have the opportunity to reflect on the climate protection dilemma via a computer simulation designed by ZEW. The event is for free, but registration is required due to the limited number of places.

    Visiting Researcher

    From February 15 to August 15, 2012, Prof. Dr. Chen Shaofeng from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS), Institute of Policy and Management (IPM), will be visiting researcher in the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management”. Prof. Chen is one of the authors of the annual China Sustainable Development Strategy Report. During his stay, he will familiarize with the work of ZEW and other European institutions, especially on the topics Lead Markets, Indicators for Environmental Innovations, and New Emerging Strategic Markets: E-Mobility, Renewables and Energy Efficiency. Chapters concerning these topics are scheduled for the next China Sustainable Development Report.

    Germany is often criticised for producing too few university graduates compared with other countries. Most recently, the OECD warned that too few young people are pursuing university education in this country. Yet Friedhelm Pfeiffer, an educational economist at the Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW), considers this focus to be too narrow.

On January 23, 2012, ZEW President Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. mult. Wolfgang Franz and Director of Business and Administration Thomas Kohl welcomed approx. 30 representatives from member companies of the ZEW Sponsors Association to the first Sponsors Association Breakfast. The objective of the event was to foster the dialogue between science and economy on recent developments in the German energy and climate policy in a pleasant and constructive atmosphere.

    The Centre for European Economic Research (ZEW) and the Basque Centre for Climate Change (BC3) are jointly organising a conference on "New Directions in the Voluntary Provision of International Public Goods", scheduled for April 17-18, 2012, in Mannheim, Germany. International and global public goods are increasingly attracting attention on the political agenda, thereby reinforcing interest in the theory of the voluntary provision of public goods. This conference brings together renowned researchers in order to present their theoretical, experimental, and empirical work. Furthermore, it aims to thoroughly discuss and advance new directions in the research on the voluntary provision of international public goods. We invite interested participants (non-presenters) to register no later than March 19, 2012, via our registration site. Please note that only a limited number of non-presenters will be able to attend. The conference fee is EUR 110, covering conference materials, coffee breaks, and first conference day's lunch.

    From January 30 to August 1, 2012, Prof. Dr. Hongxia Duan from the China Center for Energy Economics Research at Xiamen University is visiting researcher in the ZEW Research Department "Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management". The focus of her research is on environmental economics and its application in environmental planning and management. During her stay at ZEW, she will deal with the development of emission trading systems as well as the willingness in China to pay for climate protection. For the time of her stay she receives a grant from the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD).

    From January 30 to April 30, 2012, Olga Slivko is visiting researcher in the ZEW Research Department "Industrial Economics and International Management". She is researcher and PhD student at Universitat Rovira i Virgili. The focus of her research is on economics of innovation, contract theory, and applied econometrics. During her stay at ZEW, she will deal with patent activities in the field of key technologies. In addition, she will continue her work on the effect of spillovers and competitive pressure on R&D strategies of companies.
