Dean’s Teaching Award for Distinguished Lecturers Goes to Professor Bettina Peters

Professor Bettina Peters, deputy head of the ZEW Research Department “Economics of Innovation and Industrial Dynamics”, was awarded the Dean’s Teaching Award for Distinguished Lecturers at Pforzheim University on 23 June 2021. The professor of innovation from the University of Luxembourg received the award, which is presented annually, for her teaching commitment at Pforzheim University’s Faculty of Business and Law.
Professor Friedrich Heinemann, head of the ZEW Research Department “Corporate Taxation and Public Finance”, welcomed Ludger Schuknecht to the virtual #ZEWBookTalk on 6 July 2021. He discussed with him his current book “Public Spending and the Role of the State – History, Performance, Risk and Remedies”. Schuknecht, who is currently a visiting professor at the Lee Kuan Yew School of Public Policy, previously held the positions of Deputy Secretary-General at the OECD and Chief Economist at the German Federal Ministry of Finance. For the #ZEWBookTalk, he was connected from Singapore.
Using the Orbis and Zephyr Databases for Scientific Work

“Taxation, Venture Financing and State Aid: Using Orbis & Zepyhr Data in Economic Analysis” was the title of an online seminar organised by ZEW Mannheim and Bureau van Dijk (BvD) on 1 July 2021. The seminar focused on the scientific use of BvD’s Orbis and Zephyr databases. By presenting three research projects, scientists from several European research institutions illustrated the many possibilities of using the two databases.
The ZEW Annual Report 2018, which is dedicated to the topic of “Digitalisation”, was honoured in the category “Best of Decade” (2010 to 2020) at the International Creative Media Awards. Along with 28 other reports, it is one of the best works from the first decade of the ICMA Awards in the Annual Reports (online and print) category and is the only report from a research institute to appear in this list.
19th ZEW Conference on the Economics of Information and Communication Technologies

On 10 and 11 June 2021, the ZEW Research Department “Digital Economy” organised the 19th Conference on the Economics of Information and Communication Technologies, which covered a broad range of topics in the field of digitalisation. This year, as in 2020, it took place virtually again due to the pandemic. The event has been one of the most important scientific conferences in the field of digital economy for years. This was once again demonstrated by the more than 100 papers submitted and around 300 participants who registered for this year’s edition.

Jobs, fast internet, good public transport connections – many things are unequally distributed across regions in Germany and Europe. But how can we create equal living conditions and how much equality do we need? These and other questions were discussed on 23 June 2021 by Constanze Krehl, Member of the European Parliament from Saxony, and ZEW expert Professor Sebastian Siegloch, head of the ZEW Research Department “Social Policy and Redistribution”, in the digital event series #ZEWlive. The debate was moderated by journalist Jessica Sturmberg.

The German Real Estate Finance Index (DIFI) by ZEW Mannheim and JLL increased for the fourth time in a row and is only slightly negative in the second quarter of 2021 at minus 3.3 points (plus 10.7 points compared to the previous quarter). The current market situation as well as the market expectations for the next six months have again improved significantly. The expectations indicator jumped into positive territory with a plus of 13.9 points, reaching its highest level since the end of 2015.

This year, the ZEW Research Department “Environmental and Resource Economics, Environmental Management” will again present its latest findings in the field of environmental economics at the annual conference of the European Association of Environmental and Resource Economists (EAERE). The portfolio is complemented by a presentation from the “Digital Economy” department. 13 ZEW researchers will present their results at the digital conference, which takes place from 23 to 25 June 2021.
Fighting climate change is an enormous challenge. To avert potentially catastrophic global warming the EU intends to become climate neutral by 2050. Among other measures, carbon pricing is anticipated to play a key role. In this interview, Professor Sebastian Rausch explains how greenhouse gas emissions can be reduced in market economies.
