Adaptation and Mitigation Strategies: A Market Study for the German Insurance Sector

The project investigated the effects of adaptation strategies to climate change with a focus on the insurance industry in Germany. In a first step, we presented the current state of research on the expected direct climate change damages and adaptation costs and benefits. Secondly, we analysed to what extent adaptation requires governmental intervention. Thirdly, the impact of climate change on the product portfolio of the German insurance industry was explored. Furthermore, the potential role of insurance companies in Carbon Capture and Storage (CCS) was analysed.
